Blog 3: The Wind That Shakes The Barley Review

Hi everyone! I hope you enjoyed the film, "The Wind that Shakes the Barley" directed by Ken Loach.

I love this film so much. I think it is beautifully made and is a very powerful film. I think it's genius to show the contrast of the revolutionaries of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) and the reformists through two brothers. The film is very dark and tragic, but I think it is also real because it shows the barbarism of imperialism, in this case of the British empire.

My favorite characters are Damien O'Donovan, Sinear, and Dan. I like Damien because at first he was not sure to fight for the Irish Republic, but after he transforms and becomes a great revolutionary. Sinear, showed the importance of women in the Irish struggle since historically men and women played an important role. Dan was a great secondary character and was loyal to the cause until the end.

What I don't like about the film is how long it is, but I understand that in order to tell the whole story it is necessary for it to be so long.

My favorite scene I think is, well I have 2, the first one is when the British soldier frees the IRA members because he said he doesn't want their death on his conscious.  The second scene is when they are having the court meeting and decide that the landlord can't charge so much interest and must payback the old woman, I love it because it shows how the IRA wanted to have a new social order and not just a different flag.
